How Bouncer works
Cricket stats usually ignore context. A fifty against Australia on a green seamer is not the same as a fifty against a weakened side on a flat deck — but a batting average treats them identically.
Bouncer fixes this by running an ELO system on every single delivery. Each ball has three actors — batter, bowler, and venue — and the model learns how much each one contributed to the outcome. Over thousands of deliveries, this builds up a picture of genuine skill separated from circumstance.
On top of the ELO ratings, skill indices measure how a player performs relative to what the model expects. A batter with a high scoring index is consistently beating their expected output; a bowler with a strong economy index is conceding fewer runs than the model thinks they should. These indices are the residuals — the part of performance that can’t be explained by opposition quality or pitch conditions.
